Must be a resident of Virginia for at least 12 months and have no ties with any other state such as a driver’s license, auto registration, voter registration, or tax returns.
Must be a former Burley Tobacco Quota Holder or Producer or the direct descendant of a former Burley Tobacco Quota Holder or Producer. Direct descendants include spouse, child, grandchild, great-grandchild, etc. Step-children and adopted children are also considered direct descendants.
Must be able to provide documentation to verify identity as former quota holder or grower as well as a notarized statement from this individual defining the relationship to the applicant.
WHAT: Program to assist with tuition and academic up to $2,000 per academic year, including Fall of the first year, Spring and Summer of the second year. For example, Fall 08, Spring 09 and Summer 09.
WHEN: Applications open online beginning March 1 of each year and remains open until December 15 of each year or until funding is depleted. Awards are dependent upon the availability of funds from the Virginia Tobacco Commission.

Assistance can be used at any accredited 4-year college or university, public or private, in-state or out-of-state.

Must express an intent to become employed in one of the 24 Southside Virginia localities upon graduation in a field relative to the earned degree in order to receive cancellation of the loan. If the student does not meet this requirement, repayment begins 12-months after graduation or ceasing to be enrolled in qualifying courses. Interest rates are 6%. Minimum payment is $100 per month.

TCI awards student scholarships of up to $1000 each to tall students who are under 21 years of age and attending their first year of college in the following Fall. Open to high school juniors and seniors. This year’s essay competition is based on the book “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” by Robert Louis Stevenson. You must write an essay on one of three selected topics listed on the Web site to be considered for this award. In addition to the $1,000 scholarship awarded to you if you are a winning student, your high school will also receive a Signet Classic library. Five $1,000 scholarships. Deadline: April 15.
Open to graduating minority high school seniors who have been accepted by a four-year accredited college or university. You must have a minimum 1000 SAT score or 21 ACT score, be a United States citizen and demonstrate academic achievement, leadership potential and financial need, and provide a personal essay and a letter of recommendation from your high school guidance counselor. This is a four-year award of up to $7,500 per year. Deadline: March 31.
Open to all high school seniors who plan to attend any accredited two-year or four-year college or university within the United States.
