Four student-athletes have indicated they will attend Tusculum College and play basketball for the Pioneers announced TC men’s head coach Jim Boone. Joining Tusculum this fall are Corey Poindexter, Lavonti Jeter, Rob Zalucki and Pat Carwile.
“We could not be more pleased or excited with this, our first full recruiting class at Tusculum, than we are with this group of young men,” said Coach Boone. “We have diligently addressed each of our program’s needs, not only for the coming season, but for the long-term future of our basketball program.”
Lavonte Jeter, a 6-7, 230-pound product from Alexandria, Va., is expected to see action in the post for the Pioneers. Jeter comes to Greeneville from Garrett College in McHenry, Md. where he posted 11 points and six rebounds.
Also joining the Pioneers from Garrett College is point guard Pat Carwile. The 6-4, 205-pound native from Centreville, Pa. averaged 10 points and five assists per game as the Lakers went 20-6. Carwile’s assist tally was also ninth in the conference.
Carwile played his prep career at Westfield High School where he accounted for 17 points, four rebounds and six assists per contest. He garnered All-District and All-Region honors and was named District Most Valuable Player and was tabbed to the Northern Virginia All-Area squad.
“With the addition of Pat and LaVonti, we have met our most pressing needs with two very talented young men,” said Boone. “They have been integral parts of a very good program at Garrett Community College and will be most prepared to challenge for immediate playing time in our program.”
Corey Poindexter, a 6-1, 180-pound guard from Dublin, Va., comes to Tusculum after playing last season at Hargrave Military Academy where he averaged seven points and three assists per game. Hargrave posted a 28-2 record last year, while capturing a national championship.
Poindexter played at Pulaski County High School in Dublin shere he was a three-time All-District and two-time All-Region performer. He averaged 15 points, three rebounds and four assists per game at Pulaski County as his senior squad went 26-2.
Rob Zalucki, a native of Dexter, Mich., will look to add depth to the Tusculum post. The 6-6, 235-pound product was a two-time All-Conference selection at Dexter High School. Zalucki averaged 13 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks per game while also being named to the All-Ann Arbor Area Second Team and was a McDonald’s All-America nominee. He led his prep squads to a pair of district titles.
Zalucki earned Scholar Athlete distinction in 2005 and 2006 and was the recipient of the SEC Scholar Athlete Award.
The quartet joins fellow Ryan McLaurin (Apex, N.C./Apex HS) and Jimmy Boone (Greeneville, Tenn./Greeneville HS) in this year’s Tusculum recruiting class.
“Corey, Jimmy, Ryan, and Rob have provided our program with four outstanding freshmen,” Coach Boone said. “They are all winners, having played at a very high level scholastically and will have extremely bright futures here at Tusculum College. And, just as our returning student-athletes, this class is represented by young men of character. As good as they are as players they are even better students and people.
Tusculum College, located in Greeneville, Tenn. and affiliated with the Presbyterian Church, USA, is a NCAA Division II member of the South Atlantic Conference which is comprised of eight colleges and universities in Tennessee, North Carolina and South Carolina.
